1980s Hair Notes
General Rules
• No Modern Color: Hair must be natural-looking tones. No "fashion colors" (pink, blue, purple), harsh ombré, or high-contrast modern balayage.
• Matte over Shine: The 80s were the era of hairspray and volume, not the sleek, "glass hair" look of today. Avoid heavy oils or shine serums.
• Product is Your Friend: Don't be afraid of mousse, gel, or firm-hold hairspray.
Women’s Styling
The keyword for the 80s is volume. We want height and width.
• The Prep: Please arrive with your hair already set in rollers or having been braided overnight to create texture.
• Perms & Curls: Authentic perms or tight "scrunching" are highly encouraged. If you have natural curls, embrace them!
• The "Wall" Bangs: If you have bangs, they should be teased and sprayed for height.
• Accessories: Scrunchies, banana clips, and oversized bows are welcome (ensure colors are period-appropriate: neons, pastels, or bold primary colors).
• Length: While all lengths are acceptable, short "bob" cuts should be styled with a lot of volume at the crown.
Men’s Styling
Men’s hair in the 80s was generally longer and more textured than current modern fades.
• Length: Medium length is preferred. Hair should ideally cover the tops of the ears and touch the back of the collar.
• No Modern Fades: Please avoid "skin fades," "hard parts," or sharply buzzed sides/backs.
• The "Mullet" Silhouette: Even if not a full mullet, having more length in the back than the top is very period-accurate.
Extra Tips
• Avoid the "Flat" Look
Please do not arrive with "beach waves" made by a modern flat iron; these look too contemporary. Use a curling iron or rollers instead.
