We are going to have a lot of people and a lot of departments working together, so let’s all help create a comfortable, respectful and lovely working environment for one another.
Every little bit of preparation helps Costumes, Hair, Makeup, Production and your fellow background artists do their jobs more efficiently and helps this incredible show flow as smoothly as possible.

👗 COSTUME NOTES > FIT DAY OFs:
VERY IMPORTANT / WHAT TO BRING (ANY ITEMS HELP)
🧼 PLEASE ARRIVE FRESHLY BATHED
Out of consideration for our Costume staff, allergies, and the preservation of rented garments, please DO NOT wear perfume or cologne to your fitting.
👕 PLEASE WEAR PROPER UNDERGARMENTS
Please wear the undergarments you plan to wear on your filming day, including bras, T-shirts/undershirts, underwear, etc.
DO NOT arrive at your fitting without underwear and/or a bra, when applicable.
👗 COSTUMES NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Costumes is requesting that you bring as many options from the list below as possible to help complete your period look.
Please bring any period-style, period-inspired, vintage, or classic clothing and shoe options you already own that may work for your character.
The more appropriate options you can bring, the more helpful it will be to the Costume Department!

HAIR + MAKEUP PREP — PLEASE ARRIVE READY
Our Hair + Makeup Departments have put together detailed reference guides for you below. Please take the time to review the information that applies to you before you arrive for filming.
You do not have to be a professional at doing period Hair or Makeup. We just need you to follow the prep instructions as closely as you can and arrive ready for the departments to finish and perfect your look.
💇 HAIR — EVERYONE
Please arrive with your hair fully prepped in the way the Hair Department has requested.
SEE BELOW VISUAL GUIDES
MEN: Please arrive with clean, completely dry hair with NO product in it. Be prepared for Hair to make any period-appropriate adjustments or haircut needed for your look.
WOMEN: Please arrive with your hair ALREADY SET using hot rollers, foam rollers or Flexi rods, depending on your hair type and what you have available at home. The Hair Department notes that smaller rollers create more of the 1980s texture they are looking for. Please also bring a small bag for your rollers after the stylist removes them.
And please do not stress if you have never set your hair this way before. Hair specifically understands there is a learning curve and their stylists will help you improve and make sure you are camera-ready before you go to set.
🧔 MEN — FACIAL HAIR
For this booking, we want our men to arrive prepared as follows:
MUSTACHES: KEEP YOUR MUSTACHE! If you currently have a mustache, please do not shave it off.
BEARDS: Please SHAVE YOUR BEARD before arriving (leaving the mustache for us).
SIDEBURNS: KEEP YOUR SIDEBURNS LONG. Please do not trim them short before filming.
The department’s period references show that mustaches and longer sideburns are absolutely appropriate for the era, while clean-shaven looks are also common depending on the character.
PLEASE DO NOT make a dramatic facial-hair change beyond these instructions unless Casting or Hair specifically asks you to. IF YOU ARE SCARED BRING YOUR SHAVING KIT WTIH YOU.
🚨 IMPORTANT HAIR REMINDER FOR MEN
Please arrive with freshly washed, thoroughly rinsed hair, completely free of styling products. This includes gel, pomade, wax, hairspray, oils and leave-in products.
We need your hair fluffy and full of as much life and natural volume as possible to create that ’80s look! Even if it still looks clean, please wash out any oil or product buildup before coming to set.

💄 WOMEN — MAKEUP
Please arrive with your makeup already completed in the way the Makeup Department has requested for your period/look.
This is period makeup, not modern social-media makeup. The Makeup Department’s guides emphasize realistic, lived-in period faces and specifically warn against modern trends like laminated brows, severe contour, glass-skin/highlight, crisp modern wings and obvious modern lashes.
For the look, the department is going for a clean, polished daytime face, not a nightclub or modern glam look. Their references call for a more period-appropriate finish with stronger eyes/lips where appropriate, while still looking believable for the character and setting.
Please arrive fully makeup-ready so the Makeup Department can make any final adjustments rather than having to start your entire look from scratch.

💅 NAILS
Please review the Nails + Polish guide carefully and make sure your nails work for the period.
Plain, natural nails are ALWAYS a safe choice.
Please avoid anything that reads obviously modern. The department’s nail references show period-appropriate shapes and colors varying by year and character.
If you have fake, acrylic or press-on nails that look noticeably modern, please be prepared for them to need to be cut down or removed so they match the show’s period directive.
✨ PIERCINGS + JEWELRY
Please remove ALL facial piercings before arriving to set.
Please also leave trendy, expensive or sentimental jewelry at home. We do not want you wearing anything that looks too modern for the period, and more importantly, we do not want you misplacing something special to you while working on set.
If jewelry is needed for your character, Costumes will help guide the look.

MAKEUP NOTES BY ROLES
Apartment Complex, Clear Lake, TX ’78 - Friday Oct 16
All ASCANS MUST be completely clean shaven or mustache only with zero stubble. Mustaches cannot go below their upper lip line.
MORTON THIOKOL & MSFC employees - October 21 & 23
Men who work for MT/MSFC need to be clean shaven, no exeptions.
Women need to wear minimal/clean makeup. No bright colors or heavy eyes. They kept it very natural, so we will too!
JSC MISSION CONTROL - October 30: If they are different than our JSC Personnel we've seen prior, pls have them come either clean shaven or mustache only with no stubble. They can have groomed sideburns down to the lower lobe. We'll perfect if needed.
MEMORIAL HOSPITAL - October 21
Hospitals are all over the place but lets keep the facial hair super clean - no stubble. Must be willing to shave completely. No goatees!
Nurses - super clean/minimal to no makeup
ER patients: zero makeup
Orderlies/Family members - super clean/minimal to no makeup
Mouse Trap Dive Bar - October 20 and Outpost bar scenes - Oct 28 and 29
Ladies -makeup references above in the "Bar Makeup" pic. We don't want anything too glam, but sticking to warmer tones, keeping it more natural) Still no false lashes or microbladed brows or modern nails.
Pic of nails we do NOT want is attached. Pls still keep the nails inspo we DO want, but emphasize that designs and raised textures are NOT period appropriate and they need to be taken care of/removed before the day. (We had a number of girls "not see" that direction in their emails, so want to reiterate.) :)
Bartenders/bar patrons: they can be a little more unkept facial hair wise. We can have some beards, as long as they're not polished or modern with sharp lines or fades. Photo of what NOT to do beard-wise is attached. Pls pass along for us!
Outpost ASCANS: pls have them come either clean shaven or mustache only. NO STUBBLE.
If they've been established already, pls have them come exactly as they were on the last day. They can have no stubble on face/neck. Many guys are coming with stubble expecting us to shave and we unfortunately don't have the man power to shave everyone. I've had them shave themselves and we'll get excess, but it will save so much time if they come with zero stubble. Sideburns can be slightly past the ear lobe b/c it's '78.
